This painting of a strange, brave Sitka spruce was created at the edge of Connell Lake, which was dammed up in the 1950s. Sitka spruce are usually quite majestic and soar straight and true up to 500 feet. This little spruce was growing on a fallen log in a swampy area at the edge of the lake and it was so intriguing I had to paint it.

As usual, I sat on my little stool to paint this with my hiking gouache paint kit, surrounded by my three border collies.

The morning was bright and calm, which we always appreciate in the rainy Tongass National Forest!

This painting will be carefully packaged wrapped in acid-free paper with a strong backing board, padding and a bend-proof mailer.
